This part of the site is the home for a considerable body of information which I have collected regarding the theorbo and other continuo lutes, over many years. Some of it is overspill information from my doctoral thesis (The Development of Italianate Continuo Lutes, Open University, 2001). I hope to publish the thesis as a book one day, but there will still be overspill information!
Much of the material gathered here is practical information for those wishing to acquire, play or write for a theorbo. The pages nested within this one should be self-explanatory. This part of the site is in a permanent state of 'work in progress', so please do check back regularly. I am always grateful for any new information, so please let me know if you have written music for the theorbo, published anything about it, spotted one in your local museum, or started building them professionally.
